Adelaide Oval is a major multi-purpose stadium in Adelaide, South Australia, used for international and domestic cricket and Australian rules football. It is one of Australia’s best-known sporting venues and combines heritage facilities with modern stands.
The oval features a traditional grass playing surface surrounded by stands and historic structures, including an early 20th-century scoreboard and members’ pavilion, alongside newer stands added during recent redevelopments. The venue hosts test cricket, one-day internationals, T20s and AFL matches, plus concerts and events.
Originally established in the 19th century, the ground has evolved through successive upgrades to accommodate larger crowds and modern broadcast requirements while retaining key heritage elements. The 21st-century redevelopment expanded capacity and public amenities.
Adelaide Oval sits adjacent to the River Torrens and close to the Adelaide central business district, within easy reach of central Adelaide by road and public transport.
- Primary sports use: The ground serves as Adelaide's primary international cricket venue and a major Australian Football League (AFL) stadium.
- Redevelopment: A major redevelopment completed in the 2010s improved capacity, corporate facilities and spectator sightlines while retaining heritage elements of the ground.
What to See #
- Playing surface and Members' Pavilion: The heritage members' pavilion and playing surface, which have been in use since the ground's early years and are central to test cricket and domestic matches.

- Heritage scoreboard and ground: The historic scoreboard and surrounding parkland that form part of the oval's visual character and public amenity.

Tips for Visiting Adelaide Oval #
- Use public transport on event days - trains to Adelaide Railway Station stop immediately next to the Oval and the pedestrian footbridge links straight to the stadium, which is far quicker than driving when crowds are leaving.
- Book an official Adelaide Oval guided tour on a non-event day in advance if you want behind‑the‑scenes access (dressing rooms, heritage displays and elevated viewpoints) that you won't get during matches.
- If you're attending a major match or concert, arrive at least 45-60 minutes before kickoff to clear security and pick up tickets; leaving by the railway station platform reduces time stuck in surface traffic when crowds depart.
