Adamello-Presanella Alps

The Adamello-Presanella Alps are a mountain group in northern Italy, straddling Trentino and neighbouring Lombardy. The range includes multiple peaks above 3,000 metres and important glacier systems.

The area is a major destination for mountaineering, long-distance trekking and winter sports, offering alpine routes, via ferrata, and mountain huts (rifugi) that support multi-day traverses. Glacier travel is centred on the Adamello Glacier, while technical climbs focus on the higher summits.

The high Alpine environment saw early mountaineering activity in the 19th and early 20th centuries and was the scene of high-altitude combat during World War I. Over the 20th century the region developed infrastructure for alpinism and skiing.

The group lies in northern Italy across Trentino and parts of Lombardy, forming part of the central Alps and occupying the inland mountain zone north of the Po plain.

• Elevation: Several peaks in the group exceed 3,000 metres, with Presanella and Adamello among the highest and most visited by alpinists.
