Ada Kaleh
Island Former Danube island submerged, known for Ottoman community
Formerly a Danube river islet with a Turkish community, Ada Kaleh was submerged during the 1970s Iron Gate dam project; visitors now study its memory in regional museums and histories.
Ada Kaleh was a small island in the Danube River that lay near the town of Orșova and had a predominantly Turkish/Ottoman character. It was known for a fortress, narrow streets, a small mosque and bazaars before it was submerged in the 20th century reservoir works.
The island’s community and many movable artifacts were relocated when the Iron Gates hydroelectric project flooded the area in 1970. Remnants and memories of the island’s buildings and social life survive in museums and oral histories.
Ada Kaleh formerly sat in the Danube near the Romania-Serbia border region, close to the modern town of Orșova and the Iron Gates gorge.
- Submersion year: Was flooded and permanently submerged in 1970 during the filling of the Iron Gates reservoir for a hydroelectric project.
