Acropolis Museum
Museum Modern museum housing artifacts from the Acropolis
Beneath the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum exhibits Parthenon sculptures and find‑groups with glass floors revealing excavations; a rooftop gallery looks back to the rock. Visitors study classical artifacts and context.
Acropolis Museum is a modern archaeological museum in Athens dedicated to finds from the Acropolis of Athens; the current building opened in 2009. It is located at the foot of the Acropolis and was designed to display artifacts in relation to the monument they came from.
The museum’s highlights include the top-floor Parthenon Gallery where original sculptures from the Parthenon are presented in the same east-west orientation as the Parthenon itself. A glassed ground floor leaves the excavated remains visible beneath the museum, linking the displayed objects to their archaeological context. Additional galleries arrange Archaic and Classical finds by height and original location on the Acropolis.
The collection comprises objects recovered from the Acropolis site over many centuries of excavation; the museum was created to consolidate and properly display those finds in a building that responds to the hill above. The museum building itself and its exhibition layout were completed to modern museum standards and opened in 2009.
The museum sits in the Makriyianni neighbourhood of central Athens, immediately below the Acropolis hill and within easy walking distance of the Parthenon and Plaka district.
- Best view: The roof terrace cafe has direct views of the Acropolis and the Parthenon and is a popular spot for late-afternoon visits.
- Timing and access: Security measures and timed-entry tickets are common during high season, so purchasing tickets in advance reduces waiting time.
What to See #
- Excavation Level: Sits above an active excavation visible through the glass floor on the ground level, showing remains of Roman and Byzantine houses uncovered during construction.
- Parthenon Gallery: A top-floor, purpose-built gallery that displays the Parthenon sculptures in the original orientation and lighting relative to the Acropolis hill.
- Archaic and Classical Galleries: Contains pottery, sculptures and votive objects from the Archaic to Roman periods arranged chronologically to show the Acropolis's long sequence of use.
How to Get to Acropolis Museum #
The Acropolis Museum sits at the foot of the Acropolis in central Athens. Take the Athens Metro to Akropoli (Acropolis) station on Line 2 (Red line); the museum is a very short walk from the station (a couple of minutes, roughly 200-300 m).
You can also walk from Syntagma or Monastiraki through the pedestrian Dionysiou Areopagitou and Adrianou streets (about 10-20 minutes from central Syntagma and Monastiraki areas).
Tips for Visiting Acropolis Museum #
- Book a timed-entry ticket online and arrive at opening - the top (Parthenon) gallery is the busiest but offers the clearest views of the Acropolis and is best seen before tour groups arrive.
- Enter from the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street entrance and head straight to the top floor: seeing the Parthenon marbles early gives you contextual views of the Acropolis before exploring the lower archaeology levels.
- Most visitors miss the museum's glass floor that reveals the archaeological remains of ancient Athens beneath the building - stop at the ground floor before leaving to see the excavations.
- If you plan to visit both museum and the Acropolis on the same day, do the museum first for better context and then walk up to the hill when light on the monuments is better (late afternoon or early morning).
Best Time to Visit Acropolis Museum #
Avoid peak summer crowds by visiting on weekdays in the shoulder seasons or early/late in the day; the museum is most pleasant outside June-August.
