Acrocorinth
Archaeological Site Fortified acropolis dominating the Corinthian isthmus
Perched above Corinth, Acrocorinth is a fortified acropolis with Byzantine, Frankish and Ottoman walls. Hikers and history enthusiasts explore ramparts, cisterns and broad views over the Peloponnese and Gulf of Corinth.
Acrocorinth is the fortified acropolis of ancient Corinth, a dominant rocky summit that served as the town’s citadel and principal defensive position. It occupies a steep, isolated hill overlooking the surrounding plain and the approaches to the Peloponnese.
The site contains fortifications, gates, cisterns and chapels from successive periods including Hellenistic, Byzantine, Frankish and Ottoman phases, illustrating its continuous strategic importance. The medieval fortress and walls are among the most visible remains visitors see today.
Acrocorinth was used as Corinth’s primary defensive stronghold throughout antiquity and the Middle Ages, controlling trade and military routes across the isthmus and the Peloponnese. Many repairs and reconstructions were carried out by successive rulers to adapt the site for changing military needs.
The summit overlooks the modern city of Corinth and the archaeological site of ancient Corinth, situated on the northeastern tip of the Peloponnese near the Isthmus of Corinth.
- Summit height: The acropolis rises to about 575 meters above sea level and commands views over the Isthmus of Corinth and surrounding plains.
- Multi-period fortifications: Fortifications and structures from Greek, Byzantine, Frankish and Ottoman periods are visible, reflecting continuous military use across many eras.
How to Get to Acrocorinth #
Acrocorinth (the fortified hill above ancient Corinth) is reached from the modern city of Corinth. From Athens drive west on the A8/E94 motorway toward Corinth (about 80-90 km, roughly 1-1.5 hours) and follow local roads up to the fortress; KTEL intercity buses run from Athens to Corinth town where taxis or a short uphill walk lead to the citadel.
From the town centre the climb up to the fortress is steep but walkable (about 1 km of uphill path); taxis or local vehicles can drive closer to the entrance.
Tips for Visiting Acrocorinth #
- Start at the archaeological area of Ancient Corinth and then walk up the marked footpath to Acrocorinth - the sequence gives historical context and the uphill path is quieter than driving all the way to the summit.
- Plan your visit for late afternoon to catch long golden light and panoramic views across the Isthmus, Gulf of Corinth and the Peloponnese; sunset is a particularly good time for photography and far fewer visitors.
- Many visitors focus on the fortress walls; take time to explore the interior cisterns and small chapels scattered across the summit - these features reveal the site's long occupation layers and are often overlooked.
- If you want to avoid parking congestion, arrive during weekday mornings or use public transport to Ancient Corinth and then follow the walking route up to the Acropolis.
Best Time to Visit Acrocorinth #
