Achilleion

Achilleion is a neoclassical palace and estate on the island of Corfu, Greece, originally built in the late 19th century for Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The estate is named for its collection of classical sculptures and the central motif of Achilles.

The palace interior contains decorated halls and salons arranged around formal circulation routes, while the surrounding gardens are terraced and planted with formal beds and monumental statuary that frame sea views. The garden statuary includes multiple representations of Achilles and other classical figures.

Constructed for Empress Elisabeth as a private retreat in the late 1800s, the palace later became associated with Kaiser Wilhelm II and ultimately entered public ownership; it has since been adapted as a museum and visitor attraction. The building and grounds retain late 19th-century decorative schemes and landscape arrangements.

Achilleion sits near the village of Gastouri on Corfu, positioned on a hillside with vistas across the Ionian Sea; it is reached by local roads from Corfu Town and is a common stop on island cultural tours.
