Abrolhos Archipelago
Islands Brazilian archipelago with coral reefs and shipwrecks
Group of islands off Bahia’s coast protecting coral reefs and shipwrecks; Abrolhos National Park attracts divers for reefs and sponges and boaters during humpback whale season. Visitors take liveaboard trips, snorkel and study local marine life.
The Abrolhos Archipelago lies off the southern coast of Bahia state in Brazil and comprises small islands, reefs and submerged banks noted for coral and marine biodiversity. It is a key conservation and marine tourism area in the region.
The archipelago is best known for its shallow coral reefs, clear waters for diving and snorkeling, and seasonal presence of breeding humpback whales. Boat trips from the Bahia coast provide the principal access for reef exploration, snorkeling and whale-watching excursions. Several islands feature exposed rock outcrops used as landing points and observation sites.
Portuguese sailors named the group during the colonial era and the area has since been managed through marine protection measures aimed at conserving reefs, seabird nesting sites and whale habitat.
The islands and reefs sit offshore from southern Bahia, off the coastal municipalities such as Caravelas and Alcobaça, forming an insular archipelago on the continental shelf.
- Whale season: Humpback whales breed and calf offshore seasonally, drawing boat-based whale watching between mid-year and late-year months.
- Coral reefs: The archipelago protects coral reef structures and shallow banks that are among the southern Atlantic's most important reef areas for Brazil.
