Abbey of Monte Cassino
Museum Historic Benedictine abbey and World War II battle site
Founded by St. Benedict in the 6th century, Monte Cassino sits above Cassino and was rebuilt after World War II. Visitors come for Benedictine services, the reconstructed abbey and the site’s wartime history.
Abbey of Monte Cassino is the historic Benedictine monastery founded by Saint Benedict in the early 6th century, located on a hill above the Liri valley in Lazio, Italy. It is one of the most important sites in Western monasticism and has been a religious centre and pilgrimage destination for centuries.
Visitors encounter the basilica, crypt and monastic precinct, which contain reliquaries, chapels and monastic spaces rebuilt after extensive destruction during the Second World War. The present complex combines reconstructed baroque and 20th-century elements following post-war rebuilding work.
The abbey was established by Benedict of Nursia around 529 AD and served as a spiritual, cultural and intellectual centre through the Middle Ages. In 1944 it was almost completely destroyed during the battle for Monte Cassino and subsequently reconstructed using surviving plans, photographs and archival sources.
The monastery sits on Monte Cassino hill overlooking the valley below, roughly 130 km southeast of Rome and close to the town of Cassino; the site commands wide views of the surrounding Apennine landscape.
- Founding: Founded by Saint Benedict around 529 AD, the abbey is the original Benedictine monastery and an important site in monastic history.
- WWII destruction and reconstruction: The abbey was destroyed during World War II and reconstructed after the war; the current buildings date largely to post-1944 restoration work.
