The Abbey of Echternach is a Benedictine foundation in Echternach, eastern Luxembourg, established by St Willibrord in the late 7th century. It is the historic religious centre of the town and the resting place of its founder.
The complex includes the Basilica of St Willibrord with a notable Romanesque crypt, an abbey museum with manuscripts and liturgical objects, and monastic remains that visitors can walk through. The site is also famous for the annual Whit Tuesday dancing procession held in the town.
Willibrord founded the monastery around 698; over the Middle Ages the abbey developed into an important centre for manuscript production and pilgrimage. The community and buildings were affected by secularisation during the later revolutionary period, but the basilica and crypt preserve the abbey’s medieval fabric.
Echternach lies in eastern Luxembourg on the banks of the Sûre (Sauer) river, close to the border with Germany and within walking distance of the town centre.
