The Abbey Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe is a Romanesque church in the village of Saint-Savin on the Gartempe river in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, western France. It is best known for its surviving medieval mural programme and its architectural ensemble dating mainly to the 11th and 12th centuries.
The interior is dominated by an extensive cycle of wall and vault paintings that cover the nave and choir and illustrate biblical narratives. These murals are the principal draw for visitors and are displayed across the church’s Romanesque barrel vaults and walls.
The church and associated monastic buildings were constructed and decorated in the 11th and 12th centuries for a Benedictine community; over time the abbey’s monastic functions ceased and the complex has been preserved as a historic monument. Much of the present building fabric and the mural decoration date to the medieval period.
The site sits in the rural commune of Saint-Savin in the Vienne department, on the Gartempe river in western France. The village is accessible by road from regional centres in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
