A Toxa (Isla de La Toja) is a small island and coastal spa resort in the Ría de Arousa, Galicia, Spain, best known for its thermal springs and resort development.

The island’s visitor attractions are concentrated and compact - spa and thermal treatments, a shell-adorned chapel, hotel and casino facilities, promenades and small beaches all sit within easy walking distance across the island.

The site developed into a leisure and spa destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and has since remained a regional resort for domestic and Spanish visitors.

A Toxa sits off the coast of the municipality of O Grove in Pontevedra province, in the estuary of the Ría de Arousa; it is reached from the town of O Grove by a short bridge.

  • Spa and shell chapel: Known for a long-established thermal spa tradition and a chapel extensively ornamented with shells, both of which are central to the island's identity.
  • Bridge connection: Linked to the mainland by a short bridge, making it only minutes by road from the town of O Grove and accessible by car or local buses.

What to See #

  • Thermal spa complex: A compact spa complex with thermal pools and treatment facilities that form the core of the island's tourism offer; many hotels and resorts use these thermal springs in spa packages.
  • Shell-covered chapel: A small chapel decorated extensively with shells, notable as a local landmark and photo subject rather than for its architecture.
  • Resort area and promenades: Cluster of resort hotels, a casino and promenades that occupy much of the island's developed area; most visitor facilities are within a short walking distance of the island bridge.

A Toxa (Isla da Toxa/Isla de La Toja) is connected to the O Grove peninsula by a causeway, so you reach it by road via O Grove (the island’s bridge/road link). From nearby coastal towns drive to O Grove and follow local signs onto the island; the island is commonly visited by car from Pontevedra and Sanxenxo (driving distances depend on your start point). On arrival there is short walking distance from the island’s car parks to the spa and main sights.

Tips for Visiting A Toxa Island #

  • Cross the decorative bridge from O Grove and time a late-afternoon visit to enjoy the spa promenade and island views at sunset when the resort crowds ease.
