Şeb-i Arus is Konya, Turkey’s annual commemoration of the 13th‑century poet‑mystic Jalal al‑Din Rumi and the Mevlevi Sufi order that formed around his teachings. The name means “wedding night,” a Sufi metaphor for Rumi’s union with the divine, and the observance mixes reverence with cultural performance.

The festival is centred on the Mevlana Museum, Rumi’s mausoleum, and unfolds across concert halls, mosques and public spaces with sema (whirling) ceremonies conducted by Mevlevi practitioners, Sufi music, poetry recitals and scholarly talks; the atmosphere shifts between solemn devotion in the evenings and lectures and concerts during the day.

The festival runs from 10 - 17 December each year, with programming arranged around the anniversary of Rumi’s death on 17 December (1273); the week leads to a crescendo of ceremonies on that night. Events are scheduled daily, but the most important and crowded sema ceremonies and official gatherings generally occur on the final two nights, especially the 17th.

Fly to Konya via Konya Airport or travel from Istanbul by domestic flight or high‑speed train (around four hours); many international visitors connect through Istanbul and transfer onward. Arrive at least a day before the main nights to sort tickets and local transport and book accommodation and sema tickets well in advance.

• Respect the setting: dress modestly when visiting the Mevlana Museum and during ceremonies and observe silence and stillness during sema; avoid walking in front of performers.
• Photography may be restricted during official sema and inside some ritual spaces, so check signs and follow staff instructions.
• December in Konya is cold and can be windy or snowy; bring a warm coat, hat and layers for outdoor processions and late‑night ceremonies.
• Book official sema tickets, concerts and hotels early - the city fills up for the festival and the best events sell out.
• Expect security checks at major venues and arrive early for ticketed ceremonies to get good seating and to pass bag checks without stress.
