Tirta Empul is a Balinese Hindu water temple and pilgrimage site located in Tampaksiring, central Bali; it is centred on a sacred spring used for ritual purification. The complex is an active religious site and a significant place for Balinese spiritual practices.

The main attraction is the spring-fed bathing area with a series of stone spouts and pools where worshippers enter to perform ritual cleansing; many visitors also explore the temple courtyards, shrines and gardens. The site is a focal point for ceremonies as well as everyday offerings.

Historical records and local tradition date the temple’s construction to the 10th century during the Warmadewa period, though the site has undergone restorations and additions over the centuries. The spring and temple remain central to local religious life.

Tirta Empul is located in the Tampaksiring area of central Bali, northeast of Ubud and accessible by road from major Balinese towns.

• Ritual etiquette: Visitors may observe or participate in the water purification ritual but should wear appropriate clothing and follow local protocol and attendant instructions.

What to See#

• Main purification pool: A stone-lined spring that feeds a rectangular purification pool with a line of carved spouts where worshippers perform ritual bathing under the guidance of temple attendants.

Tirta Empul (Tampaksiring) is reached by road from central Bali: drive from Ubud via Jalan Raya Tegallalang/Jalan Raya Tampaksiring following signs to Tampaksiring/Tirta Empul - many tour operators include it as a stop. A private car from Ubud or Denpasar is the usual option (expect around 30-60 minutes from Ubud, longer from Denpasar depending on traffic). There is limited regular public bus service; most visitors arrive by car or organised tour. From the parking/entrance area it’s a short walk (a few minutes) down to the temple pools.

• Arrive early in the morning before the main purification rush-this gives you time to observe the ritual order at the pools and reduces queuing at the spouts.
• Bring or rent a sarong and sash at the entrance and follow the local sequence at the water spouts (wait your turn and move from one fountain to the next) so your cleansing is respectful and efficient.
• Don't stop at the public purification area only: walk the outer temple grounds and stairs where fewer visitors go to see older shrines and reliefs that many people miss.
