Exploring Tham Pha Thai National Park#

This national park north of Lampang covers 1,284 sq km and extends through the Lampang, Ngao, Mae Moh and Chae Hom districts. Its landscapes are varied, with altitudes ranging from 280 m to 1,253 m at Doi Mae Khwan peak, near the border of Phayao Province.

Caves and viewpoints. Tham Pha Thai (tham means “cave”) is one of the most convenient sights to reach from park headquarters, a beautiful arrangement of stalactites and stalagmites running for a kilometre from the entrance. Its beauty is matched only by Lhom Phu Kaew, whose view over a large crater makes you wonder whether you are looking down on a volcano about to erupt.

Water and wildlife. Kiw Lom Dam Lake, 34 km north of Lampang, is easily reached on boat excursions, with floating raft houses for those who want to stay the night. Wildlife includes wild boar, porcupines, moles, rabbits and even monkeys, and visitors can go rafting, canoeing, swimming or kayaking, or simply cool off beneath one of the waterfalls. The best time to visit is between November and February.
