Surin, Thailands famous Elephant Round-up is a cultural festival built around the province’s long relationship with captive elephants and the mahouts who care for them. The modern event was organised to showcase traditional elephant-handling skills and to celebrate local elephant-breeding communities and their heritage.

During the festival hundreds of elephants take part in parades, choreographed demonstrations and working-skill displays that illustrate tasks from logging-era life and ceremonial pageantry. The atmosphere mixes spectacle with a market-like fairground of food stalls, handicraft sellers and cultural performances, with most activity centred in and around the town and the designated arena fields.

Surin, Thailand stages the Round-up every November on the third weekend, making the date easy to plan for each year. The festival is fixed to that weekend rather than a lunar or religious calendar.

Events are concentrated across the weekend, with parades, daytime displays and the main arena performances scheduled in blocks so visitors can pick the shows they want to attend; check the official programme for start times as they are announced each year.

The nearest major international gateway is Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi); from there you can take a domestic flight to Buriram or Ubon Ratchathani and complete the journey to Surin by road. Direct overnight trains and long-distance buses also run from Bangkok to Surin; plan to arrive at least a day early to settle in and secure tickets or seats.
