Sakunothaiyan Waterfall and Arboretum Waterfall

If you’re looking for somewhere to explore the countryside around Phitsanulok without going too far, with time for some serious chilling out, this could well be your spot.

The large, shady riverside arboretum, with a herb garden and picnic tables, is the perfect place to while away an hour or two, and the waterfall adds interest. It is not very high - only about 10 meters - but it carries a thunderous flow for most of the year, a stark reminder of the raw power of water.

Sakunothaiyan is like a smaller version of Kaeng Sopha Falls, though the latter, close to the main highway, is less relaxing thanks to its constant stream of visitors. At both, the water usually runs a muddy brown as it rushes over the lip, and the rocks at the river’s edge have been washed into curious shapes by the endless movement of the current.

The waterfall and arboretum sit on the south side of Highway 12 near the 33km marker. It’s best to go with a rented vehicle, but cheaper to take a Lom Sak-bound bus from Phitsanulok, then flag another down to return to town.
