Rongjiang sits in southeastern Guizhou province and serves as the market and transport hub for a large area of Dong minority villages. The county has a sizable population and a landscape of river valleys and steep, terraced hillsides dotted with wooden stilt houses.

The town itself grew as an administrative and trading centre; nearby villages preserve Dong traditions such as wooden drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges and polyphonic choral singing. Local life still revolves around periodic markets and seasonal festivals.

For visitors Rongjiang is compact and low-key: a strip of shops, guesthouses and government buildings, a busy local market, and a few riverside streets where minibuses and taxis gather. Most travelers come to use the town as a base for day trips to nearby villages rather than for attractions in the town itself.

Rongjiang is the gateway to some of Guizhou’s best-preserved Dong villages and traditional village life. Visitors come to see hillside stilt houses, hear village choirs and time their visit to local events such as the San Yue San spring festival. The town has enough guesthouses, guides and minibuses to make village-hopping straightforward, and the surrounding scenery is quietly photogenic.

Rongjiang has warm, wet summers and mild winters with a pronounced rainy season in late spring and early summer. Aim for spring or autumn to avoid the heaviest rains and to catch local festivals.

Rongjiang is primarily reached by road; long-distance buses and shared minibuses connect it to regional hubs. Most international travellers come via Guiyang or Kaili and continue by bus.

• By Air: Guiyang Longdongbao (KWE): Fly into Guiyang Longdongbao Airport and take a long-distance bus or hire a car; road travel to Rongjiang is roughly 4-6 hours depending on route, with fares for buses typically in the CNY 120-200 range.
• By Bus: from Kaili City: Direct buses and shared minibuses run from Kaili to Rongjiang; the trip can take about 6.5 hours on older roads and costs roughly CNY 40-100 depending on service and vehicle.
• By Rail + Bus: via Kaili: Take a train to Kaili and switch to a bus or minibus for the road trip to Rongjiang; this is the common route for travelers coming from Guiyang or further afield.

Getting around town is simple; visiting surrounding villages requires either local minibuses, hired taxis or hiring a driver for the day.

• Walking: Rongjiang’s centre is compact and best explored on foot, with market streets and guesthouses within easy walking distance.
• Shared minibus and local buses: Shared minibuses connect Rongjiang with nearby villages and take a variable time; fares are paid in CNY and are inexpensive but schedules can be irregular.
• Hired taxi or driver: Hiring a taxi or a private driver for a day is the most convenient way to visit multiple villages and costs more but saves time and provides flexibility.

Food in Rongjiang is straightforward: small restaurants and street stalls serve Dong and Guizhou dishes - rice, pickled and sour-flavored soups, chili-forward sauces and simple meat dishes. Guesthouses often provide home-style meals, and the market area has a handful of reliable eateries for breakfast and lunch.

Nightlife is quiet and low-key: small bars linked to guesthouses, tea shops and evening market stalls; expect early nights and friendly conversation rather than clubbing.

Shop at the market for textiles, embroidery, silver trinkets and everyday goods; stalls near the bus station sell souvenirs and locally made cloth and accessories produced by Dong artisans.
