Rantepao Travel Guide

The town of Rantepao is positioned in the northern highlands of South Sulawesi. Rantepao embraces a traditional culture, which involves fascinating burial rituals.

With Rantepao being home to a regional airport, getting here is easy. There are flights three times each week leaving from the regional capital city of Makassar. The town center has a wide variety of accommodation, restaurants and small shops which cater to tourists.

The picturesque natural landscape of Rantepao is one of the main draw cards, providing great trekking and mountaineering opportunities. There is a host of guided tours available, ranging in difficulty. The traditional burial rituals of the native Bugis people can been seen if you happen to be here at the right time, particularly in September and October when most are held.

Rantepao is easily reached, with a regional airport located just outside of the town. The airport handles limited flights from the regional capital city of Makassar three days each week, from where connections to Jakarta’s international airport are possible. It is also possible to take a bus or private car to Rantepao from Makassar although the trip will take around 9 hours.
