Pico Simón Bolívar

Pico Simón Bolívar is a high mountain in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta massif on Colombia’s Caribbean coast in La Guajira Department. It is one of the highest peaks in the country and forms a twin-high point with nearby Pico Cristóbal Colón.

The mountain sits within a steep, compact massif that rises abruptly from the coastal lowlands and historically supported permanent snow and glaciers at the highest elevations. The dramatic relief and high-altitude ecosystems differentiate the summit and upper slopes from surrounding lowland landscapes.

The peaks are culturally significant to indigenous groups of the Sierra Nevada and lie within territories that require organised, permit-arranged access for visitors. Approaches are remote and typically undertaken as multi-day expeditions with specialist guides.

Geographically the mountain is located inland from Colombia’s Caribbean shoreline in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a compact coastal mountain range distinct from the Andes.
