The atmosphere is a mix of solemn shrine rites and boisterous street theatre: devotees in trance parade with banners and altars, while selected mediums perform extreme acts such as metal and spear piercings, fire-walking and other demonstrations of endurance. Events concentrate around the island’s main Chinese shrines and the streets of Old Phuket Town, where processions, food stalls and nightly rituals draw crowds.
