How to Get to Pakxan
Pakxan (Bolikhamsai) is best reached overland from Vientiane by long-distance bus or minivan. Vientiane (VTE) is the usual international gateway; expect several hours on regional roads to reach Pakxan.
Wattay International Airport - Vientiane (VTE): Vientiane is the main international gateway for travellers heading to Pakxan. From Vientiane you can take a long-distance bus or minivan west along Route 13 to Pakxan (multi-hour road journey) or transfer to local services via Thakhek depending on schedule.
Savannakhet / local airstrips: There are regional airports and seasonal services in central Laos, but Vientiane remains the most reliable international arrival point for onward road travel to Pakxan.
Train: Laos’ rail network (Lao-China railway) currently links Vientiane with Boten and other major points, but for Pakxan road travel is still the standard final leg. Use rail to reach provincial hubs then transfer by bus.
Bus: Long-distance buses and minivans run from Vientiane, Thakhek and Savannakhet to Pakxan; journeys are multi-hour (often 4-7 hours depending on origin) and are the most common way to reach the town from the capital and central Laos.
