Otter Trail Trail
The Otter Trail is a classic five-day coastal trek along rugged cliffs, indigenous forest and sweeping beaches on the Garden Route. It is prized for dramatic seaside vistas, tidal river crossings and spaced SANParks huts and campsites that let you savour wild coastline without heavy base loads.

A scenic 45 km, five-day point-to-point hike through protected coastal wilderness.
Time to Hike: 45 km over 5 days, typically walked in easy stages with overnight stays in SANParks huts and campsites.
Best Time to Go: Spring and autumn offer the most stable weather and comfortable temperatures; summer is busy and winter can be wet.
Getting there: Trail runs inside Tsitsikamma National Park on the Garden Route coast; the usual start is at the Storms River Mouth and the finish at Nature’s Valley. Access requires a car or prebooked transfer; public transport is limited.
Costs: Bookings and fees are handled by SANParks; expect hut and park fees and the cost of a shuttle or return transport. Budget modestly for permits, transport and basic food supplies.
Difficulty: Coastal terrain with rocky scrambling, sandy beaches and multiple river crossings at low tide - not high altitude but exposed to surf, sun and sudden weather changes.
About Otter Trail#
The route threads along a rugged stretch of coastal Garden Route scenery - steep cliffs, pebble and sandy beaches, coastal fynbos and pockets of indigenous forest. You will pass river mouths and tidal pools, with constant sea views that change with each headland.
Over five days hikers stay in SANParks huts and designated campsites spaced to suit day stages. The huts are basic and communal; carrying a light pack and treating water or bringing supplies is standard practice. The Otter Trail is notable for being a classic South African coastal multi-day walk maintained inside a national park and for its accessible yet wild character.
Getting There#
Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) is the nearest major airport with road links to the trail area. From the city most hikers drive west into the Tsitsikamma National Park to the Storms River Mouth trailhead, though some arrive from towns along the Garden Route.
Most parties walk from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley and must arrange return transport; taxis and private shuttle services operate, or you can set up a two-car shuttle if self-driving.
Best Time to Hike#
In South Africa the Otter Trail is most walkable in spring and autumn - roughly September to November and March to May - when temperatures are mild and coastal weather is more settled. Summer brings heat and the busiest crowds; winter can be wet with rough seas and occasional storm closures.
Huts and campsite slots sell out well in advance so book with SANParks as early as possible. Be prepared for sun, sudden rain and strong onshore winds; river mouths and tidal sections require care around high swell.
