Oecussi Travel Guide
Oecussi is a dry, mountainous region in the western part of East Timor. There is very little here for travellers to see and do and most prefer to visit the capital city of Dili instead.
- Worth It?
- Not unless you plan on doing some missionary or charity work; there really isn't much to see here.
- What to Do
- visit the local people and learn about their culture.
- Best Time to Go
- the weather is driest and slightly cooler than the rest of the year during May and November.
- How Long?
- A day or less is enough to see Oecuzzi.
- Trivia
- in an elaborate hoax during the 1970s and 1980s New Zealander anarchist Bruce Grenville invented a history of the region where the state tribes united against the Portuguese and sold stamps and other souvenirs to mark this fictitious event.
Oecussi is the poorest region of East Timor and one of the poorest places in the world. Don't expect to find tourist attractions, fancy hotels and restaurants selling international cuisine in this dusty town.
However, life doesn't get much realer than in Oecussi and if you need a serious break from the tourist scene, this is a good place to come and get a little perspective. Water is scarce here, however, so you should bring your own supply, along with a tent to spend the night in.
Travel to Oecussi - Getting There
Oecussi is very difficult to get to as the roads are bad. Most people arrive by ferry, with departures from Dili twice a week, and the journey takes 12 hours.
