Trivia
Nyaungshwe is the gateway to Inle Lake.

Nyaungshwe is a bit of a ghost town, with a small population and little in the way of attractions itself, yet its positioning near to Inle Lake is the main reason that people head out this way. In and around the town itself are many derelict stupas (dome-shaped shrines built by Buddhists) and some nice scenery.

In addition to Inle Lake, there are several popular towns along Highway 4 to the north of Nyaungshwe, including Heho, Aungban, and Taunggyi.

Travel to Nyaungshwe - Getting There

Nyaungshwe lies about 20 or so kilometers off of Highway 4 and can be reached by bus from Mandalay, via Meiktila. However, this is an all-day journey. The fastest way to Nyaungshwe is to fly from Mandalay to nearby Heho Airport and take a taxi. Mandalay International Airport is the closest major airport to Nyaungshwe and is about an hour's transfer time from downtown Mandalay. Connections from here to Yangon take about 1 hour.
