Often overlooked by tourists, Negros Occidental is a treasure trove of rugged natural attractions awaiting those who choose to stay for a while. Caves, mountainous forests and white-sand beaches highlight the outdoor scene.
For more than 100 years, Negros Occidental was synonymous with sugar production; sugarcane was the number one cash crop and it sponsored substantial building products that can still be seen in historic districts. Agriculture is still an important industry, and visitors are sure to see sugar plantations during their visit.
Sipalay is the premier resort community, found on the southwest coast of the island. This is far from the transportation gateway in Bacolod, so there are refreshingly few tourists on the beaches here. Even more remote are the forested slopes of Mt Kanlaon, a haven for trekkers and nature lovers.
Getting There & Away
Bacolod is the gateway to Negros Occidental and boasts an airport and seaport. Regular flights depart for Cebu City (30 minutes) and Manila (45 minutes), both of which offer international connections. Ferries link to islands across the archipelago, while buses, jeepneysand taxis shuttle visitors from arrival points to island destinations.
