Muong Lay Travel Guide

Although not really an attraction in itself, the small town of Muong Lay is a pretty place to pause for an hour or two on the journey between Dien Bien Phu and Sapa.

Muong Lay was originally named Lai Chau and is situated in a valley beside the Da River. The people are well known for their laid back nature, and this is a good place to relax and unwind. This is a good place for trekking, although be aware that it is one of the hottest places in Vietnam and should be avoided in the scorching summer months.

There is only one place for foreigners to spend the night in Muong Lay, so it is best not to linger here too long. Simply take an hour or two to explore the town and then continue on your journey.

Getting There & Away

There is a regular bus service between Muong Lay and the town of Dien Bien Phu (3 hours). There are also regular flights directly from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu (60 minutes). Hanoi’s airport has limited international connections as well as links to Ho Chi Minh City’s international airport.
