Mount Apo is the highest mountain in the Philippines, rising to 2,954 metres on the island of Mindanao. It is a potentially active stratovolcano and the centerpiece of a protected area noted for montane forests, endemic species and varied trekking routes.

The mountain offers multi-day hikes with several established approaches; common highlights include montane forest zones, panoramic summit views and the high-elevation Lake Venado used by many trekking parties. The area is important for biodiversity and is home to a number of endemic plants and animals.

Mount Apo has volcanic origins and has long been a cultural and natural landmark in southern Mindanao; it is managed as a protected area to conserve its ecosystems while supporting regulated visitor access.

Geographically, Mount Apo sits on Mindanao island in southern Philippines, inland from the Davao region and within reach of Davao City and other regional towns that serve as trailhead gateways.

  • Elevation and permits: The peak is the highest in the Philippines at 2,954 metres, and multiple established trails lead to the summit requiring multi-day hiking and local permits.
  • Best season: Best climbing conditions are during the island's dry season, when trails are less muddy and weather is more stable for summit attempts.

What to See #

  • Lake Venado: Lake Venado sits in a high basin near the summit and is a common campsite used by climbers; it lies at roughly 2,200 metres altitude.
  • Summit: The mountain summit is the Philippines' highest point at 2,954 metres and is the objective for most trekking routes, reached by multi-day ascents from established trailheads.
