Mimong Travel Guide

The remote village of Mimong is at the center of the Cambodian gold rush. Located in what is often referred to as the ‘wild east’, this once small village has mushroomed with the arrival of gold-seekers.

The gold mines at Mimong have made the district of the same name famous across Cambodia. The mining equipment here is outdated and poorly maintained, making trips to the Mondulkiri Province mines dangerous. Expect to see miners descending into the pits via ancient mine carts linked by rusty winches.

Worth it? Not unless you have a special interest in the gold mines.

What to do: visit the Mimong gold mines and Tan Lung Waterfall

Best time to go: during the dry season from December to April.

How Long? An overnight stay in Mimong is long enough

Trivia: Tan Lung Waterfall is a close by, impressive but difficult to reach waterfall.

Getting there

The village, north of the capital, can be accessed by bus from Phnom Penh. From the provincial capital of Sen Monorom, 40kms away, the journey takes 4 hours due to poor road conditions. You can also arrive via Kratie to the west, a similarly long journey.

Mimong attractions

  • Tan Lung Waterfall: this impressive waterfall is worth the trip but is notoriously difficult to reach.
  • Mimong gold mines: the mines will interest mining fans but be prepared for dangerous conditions if you want to take a look down a shaft.
