Manigango Travel Guide

The one-street town of Manigango is located half-way between Ganzi and Dege, and is the jumping off point for two of the areas main attractions - Dzogchen Gompa and Yihun Lhatso.

The town is bursting with character; everyday life here is a vibrant scene that resembles the set of a quirky Wild West Tibetan movie. Crimson robed monks zoom by on motorbikes as shaggy haired yaks shuffle along the dusty streets. Burly Tibetans on horseback are passed by noisy tractors carrying hordes of pilgrims. A short people-watching session on the main street should not be missed.

However, the truly enchanting scenery lies just outside the town. Just 13 kilometers to the west, Yilhun Lha Tso Lake pools at the foot of the magnificent, snow-capped Mount Que’er, providing a spectacular backdrop for camping or hiking.

A number or rock carvings can be found scattered around the edge of the lake. Dzogchen Gompa Monastery is located in the Rudam Valley and has been home to many great masters and scholars.

Getting There & Away

Daily flights from Beijing to Chengdu take 2 hours, 25 minutes and from here Dege is a three-day bus journey. Once in Dege, the journey to Manigango by bus takes 3 to 4 hours.
