Klungkung Palace Palace

Klungkung Palace, located in the town of Semarapura on Bali’s east coast, was the royal residence and court complex of the Klungkung kingdom. The site is best known for its court pavilion and traditional Balinese architecture.

The palace complex includes the ornate Kerta Gosa pavilion, historically used as a hall of justice and decorated with painted ceilings that depict moral and cosmological narratives in the regional Kamasan style. These paintings and the pavilion are the principal visitor highlights.

The palace functioned as the seat of the Klungkung kingdom; much of the complex was damaged or altered during conflicts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and remaining structures now serve cultural and museum roles. Conservation efforts have preserved the Kerta Gosa paintings and palace remnants for public visitation.

Klungkung Palace stands in Semarapura, the administrative centre of Klungkung Regency on Bali’s eastern side, surrounded by the town and lowland Balinese agricultural landscape.
