Kandangan is one of the southernmost towns in Borneo.

Kandangan is also capital of the Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency yet is a small town with not many people. There's not much to see here and it floods out easily, so avoid visiting anywhere in the wet season. Many people come here to do tours of the region and take in the Dayak culture and to do some trekking and bamboo rafting.

The area around Padang Batung district, seven kilometers away, is also popular with tourists owing to the Pagat Batu Recreation Forest and hot springs. In the town of Kandangan itself be sure to have a try of the tasty ketupat dishes and dodol cakes.

Travel to Kandangan - Getting There

Kandangan is accessible from Banharmasin, the provincial capital 135kms to the north, by bus or car. Travel time by bus is 5 or 6 hours. Syamsuddin Noor Airport serves Banharmasin from Jakarta in 2 hours. Taxis take 30 minutes to reach the city center from the airport.
