Kackar Mountains Trail

A compact multi-day hike through the high pastures and ridges of the Kackar Mountains in the Pontic Alps of northeastern Turkey.

Kackar Mountains hiking threads the narrow band where dense temperate forest near the Black Sea gives way to high alpine pastures, craggy ridges and small cirque lakes. Trails pass through wildflower-filled meadows, waterfalls and traditional wooden villages perched on summer plateaus, offering constant variety in a short distance.

Accommodation is a mix of family-run guesthouses in plateau villages and simple shepherd huts; wild camping is commonly practiced away from settlements. The route stands out for the intimacy of mountain culture and the contrast between humid coastal foothills below and exposed alpine terrain above.

The easiest international gateway is Trabzon airport, with regional options via Rize; both have onward buses to coastal towns. From those towns local minibuses and taxis serve plateau villages and trailheads such as Ayder and nearby highland settlements.

Most walkers start from accessible plateau villages and do a loop or a short point-to-point, arranging transport back to the coastal towns. Simple logistics and frequent minibuses make flexible start and end points practical.

The main walking season in the Kackar Mountains runs from early June through September, when high passes are mostly clear and meadows are in bloom. Snow can linger on shaded cols into June and sudden storms are common in shoulder months, so plan for variable weather.

There are no routine national permits for independent hikers, but you should reserve guesthouses in July and August. Guided options are useful for remote sections, tricky river crossings and when trail markings are unclear.
