Jerash Festival is Jordan’s flagship summer arts event, staged amid one of the best-preserved Roman sites in the region. It was created to showcase Jordanian, regional and international performing arts in a dramatic archaeological setting, turning pillars and paved streets into theatre backdrops.

Expect a programme of music, theatre, dance, folklore and occasional film or visual arts presentations; evenings are atmospheric, lit to highlight the ruins, with audiences seated on stone terraces and wandering between performances. Most activity centers in and around the archaeological site close to Jerash town centre.

The festival takes place in July and into early August each year (Jul - Aug) and is scheduled in the summer tourist season rather than by a lunar or religious calendar. Programming typically runs nightly with peak crowds on opening and headline nights, while weekday shows can be quieter and better for exploring beforehand.

The nearest international gateway is Amman (Queen Alia International Airport) in Jordan; Jerash lies roughly 45 - 60 minutes’ drive north of Amman. You can reach the site by private car, taxi or organized day tour from Amman; plan to arrive at least a couple of hours before evening performances to buy tickets and explore the ruins, and book accommodation and transport in advance for the festival period.

• Dress modestly and respectfully; Jordan is conservative and nights may be cooler than daytime heat.
• Carry plenty of water, sun protection and a light layer - July can be hot and humid, though evenings are often pleasant.
• Wear sturdy, closed shoes for walking on uneven, ancient stone and stepped seating in the theatres.
• Book tickets and nearby accommodation early; headline acts sell out and local options fill up fast.
• Arrive well before showtime to tour the ruins in daylight, expect basic security checks, and bring a small amount of cash for vendors and taxis.
