Jebel Shams Trail

Jebel Shams sits in the heart of the Al Hajar Mountains and the Balcony Walk runs along the rim above Wadi Ghul, often called the Grand Canyon of Oman. The route gives sustained, unforgettable views into a deep, rocky gorge with long stretches on high desert plateau and occasional steep descents to viewpoints.

Accommodation on the route is basic - many hikers camp on the plateau under the stars while others use simple mountain lodges or guesthouses in nearby villages. Highlights are sunrise and late-afternoon light across the canyon, dramatic rim silhouettes, and the sense of remoteness despite relative proximity to inhabited settlements.

Muscat is the nearest international gateway by air; from there most travellers drive or take a private transfer to Nizwa and onward to the western Al Hajar plateau via Al Hamra. The drive from Nizwa to the Jebel Shams plateau is a common approach.

Once on the plateau a short drive brings you to the usual trailheads and campsites. Because services are sparse, most walkers arrive by rental car or organised transfer; guided options are available from Nizwa for those who prefer not to self-drive on rough tracks.

Oman high-country walking is best from October through April when daytime temperatures are pleasant and nights are cool. Winter nights on the plateau can drop close to freezing, so bring warm layers for camp.

Book any paid accommodation in advance for busy weekends and holiday periods. Be prepared for strong sun, limited water sources on the route, and occasional storm runoff in the wadis after heavy rain; avoid travel into narrow canyon bottoms during or immediately after storms.
