Hoa Lư Ancient Capital is a historic site in Ninh Binh province, northern Vietnam, that served as the political centre of the region in the 10th and early 11th centuries. It preserves temple complexes and the remains of an early citadel.

Two main temple complexes honour the early rulers who governed from Hoa Lư, with reconstructed courtyards, stone gates and ceremonial buildings set among limestone outcrops. The compact site is frequently visited on half-day trips and is commonly combined with boat excursions in nearby karst valleys.

Interpretation focuses on the Dinh and Early Lê dynasties and the role Hoa Lư played as an early political centre in Vietnamese history.

Hoa Lư served as the capital of the Vietnamese polity under the Dinh and Early Lê dynasties in the 10th and early 11th centuries, until the capital was moved to present-day Hanoi in the early 11th century. The surviving temples commemorate rulers from that period.

The site lies in Ninh Binh province amid low karst hills, south of Hanoi and commonly reached by road from the provincial town of Ninh Binh or by day trips from Hanoi.

Hoa Lư Ancient Capital (Ninh Bình) is about 90-100 km south of Hanoi. From Hanoi you can drive or take a tourist bus along National Highway 1A (or the newer expressways), a trip of roughly 2-2.5 hours by car/coach. Trains run from Hanoi to Ninh Binh city (about 2 hours); from Ninh Binh station or the city center it’s a short taxi or local-bus ride of around 10-15 minutes (roughly 7-10 km) to the Hoa Lư historic site.

• Visit at opening time on weekdays to avoid the day-trip coach crowds arriving from Hanoi and to enjoy cooler conditions for walking between temple complexes.
• Enter through the main Hoa Lư temple gate and take the short paths to both the Dinh and Lê temple compounds-tickets typically cover both sites, so plan to see both in one visit.
• Combine the site with an early boat trip on nearby Tam Cốc or Trang An to compare the capital's intimate temple setting with the region's karst river scenery; many visitors only do one or the other and miss the contrast.
• Climb the short rise behind the temple complex for a quiet panorama of surrounding rice paddies and karst outcrops-this vantage is often less crowded than the temple courtyards.
