Hezuo Travel Guide

Hezuo is a region in the southern Gansu Province in China and it is home to many interesting buildings including a temple, mosque and tower that all attract visitors to the region.

The Hezuo Monastery is one of the most famous attractions in the city and it has a huge tower known as the Milarepa Tower. The region is also famous for its own breed of pig that isn’t found anywhere else in the world. They are called the Hezuo swine. Langshangmaio Temple and a mosque are the other major tourist draws and they are both beautiful buildings that are interesting to wander around.

The accommodation choices here at lacking and there are only very bottom range places to stay and the toilets are simply a dirty hole in the floor. Shops are also few and far between and many people visit Hezuo only for the day with the intention of seeing the attractions and moving on to Sichuan. There are a few public transportation options with the little buses being the cheapest and easiest to find.

Getting There & Away

For those starting their journey at Xiahe, there are regular buses that leave in the morning to Hezuo that take about 1 hour, 30 minutes. The nearest airport is in Lanzhou, where there are regular 1 hour, 30 minute flights to Beijing, and buses from there to Hezuo take 7 hours. From Linxia, buses take 2 hours.

Hezuo Monastery

Built back in 1777 during the qing dynasty, the building has been renovated and rebuilt a handful of times following its destruction and is an un-missable sight in hezuo as it has nine floors.

Milarepa Tower

The milarepa tower is part of the hezuo monastery and it is the actual tower that visitors can climb to see the gansu countryside from the top.
