Hall of Inspiration Museum

This recently built concrete hall houses an exhibition that displays the achievements of the Princess Mother and other members of the royal family, including King Bhumibol, Rama IX.

Seven rooms each take a different theme. The first gives an overview of the Mahidol family and the second an illustrated biography of the Princess Mother. The third describes the family’s return from Switzerland after the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932; the fourth depicts the dire conditions of hilltribe people in this region in the 1980s, when opium cultivation ruled their lives. Room five shows how King Bhumibol addressed these problems with his ‘one step at a time’ approach, and room six details the Princess Mother’s role in establishing a base here and encouraging locals to transform their lives. Finally, room seven - the room of inspiration - uses the analogy of a single drop of water rippling outwards to encourage every visitor to make a difference in others’ lives.

• Getting there: By car, take Highway 110 from Chiang Rai towards Mae Sai, turn left onto Highway 1149 at Ban Huay Khrai and follow the signs to Doi Tung; the road winds to the summit over about 30 minutes.
