Fugong Travel Guide

Fugong is a county-level town in the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, northwest Yunnan. It lies near the Burma border and as well as being a largely uneventful place, it is also hard to get to.

The town itself is set amid nice green scenery and is spread over a hillside. There’s very little to see in Fugong itself although it makes a decent enough place to stay while exploring the surroundings. Wandering around the town, stopping off at teahouses and watching the locals go about their lives is a pastime.

There is a market in town on the main street every few days where traditional Lisu bags can be had. The big attraction, though, is the scenery between Fugong and Gongshan on the Nujiang Gorge, with cliffs and waterfalls galore. Bright Moon in the Mountain (Shi Yue Liang) is a popular nearby natural attraction.

Getting There & Away

Fugong is 4 hours, 30 minutes by bus from the town of Liuku; a good 400kms from Kunming as the crow flies. For Nujiang Gorge, sleeper buses run direct from Kunming in about 14 hours (700kms); this is where the nearest major international airport is.
