Chichibu, Japan’s Night Festival (Chichibu Yomatsuri) is a compact, high-energy celebration famous for its richly decorated wooden floats (yatai) covered in lanterns, traditional musicians and shrine rituals. The event has roots in the Edo period and remains a living local tradition.

The festival atmosphere is intense after dark: floats are paraded through narrow streets, portable shrines are carried in daytime processions, and stalls line the routes. Activities are concentrated around Chichibu Shrine and the adjacent town centre, where locals and visitors gather close to the floats and fireworks.

The festival runs on fixed calendar dates: 2 - 3 December every year rather than a lunar schedule. The highlight is the night of 2 December, when the floats are illuminated and a fireworks display lights the town; 3 December focuses on daytime processions, shrine ceremonies and further float movements.

Expect the busiest crowds in the evenings; processions and shrine rituals occur at set times through both days, so check the local programme when you arrive.

Chichibu, Japan is easiest reached from Tokyo: international flights arrive at Haneda or Narita airports, then take express trains into central Tokyo and onward by rail. From Tokyo the Seibu Railway (Ikebukuro → Seibu-Chichibu) or JR/Chichibu Line services bring you to the town in roughly 1.5 - 2 hours; local buses and short walks take you from the stations to the festival area. Arrive at least a day early and book accommodation and limited-seat trains well in advance.

• Dress for cold December weather: layers, a warm coat, hat and gloves are essential for standing outside after dark in Chichibu.
• Expect large crowds and narrow streets; arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and avoid blocking shrine entrances during rituals.
• Bring cash - many food stalls and small vendors do not take cards - and a small flashlight for moving after dark.
• Be respectful at Chichibu Shrine: stay behind ropes during ceremonies, do not shout during ritual moments, and follow directions from shrine staff.
• Public transport is very busy after the fireworks; plan your return journey and be prepared for full trains or long waits for taxis.
• Book hotels and any reserved viewing tickets months ahead, as local rooms sell out quickly for the festival weekend.
