Čabar is a small mountain town in Croatia’s Gorski Kotar, a forested mountainous region between the coast and inland. It is known as a gateway to dense forests and hiking trails, with trailheads for hiking and mountain biking close to town and easy access to higher ground and karst landscapes.
The main draw is nature. Risnjak National Park protects mountainous karst scenery, and Risnjak adds a classic Gorski Kotar peak with alpine forests. For a quieter water-and-woods outing, Lake Lokve is a small mountain lake with scenic waterfalls.
For history and architecture on day trips, nearby Rijeka offers several standout sights: Trsat Castle is a medieval hilltop castle overlooking Rijeka, while the Church of Our Lady of Trsat is a hilltop pilgrimage church at the Trsat shrine. In the city center, Rijeka Cathedral is the historic seat of the diocese, and Palace Modello is a Neo-Renaissance palace that houses cultural exhibitions.
