The Bun Bang Fai festival in Yasothon, Thailand originates from Isan agrarian rituals that ask the rain spirit to bless the coming planting season. For centuries villagers have made and fired rockets as a symbolic plea to Phaya Thaen, the local rain deity, mixing animist practice with Buddhist observance.

Today the festival is a loud, communal celebration: teams and villages build ever-larger homemade rockets, local bands and dancers parade through the streets, and markets and food stalls line the route. Launch sites sit on the fringe of the town where rockets are fired in competitive displays judged on size, height and noise; the atmosphere is boisterous, festive and full of local humour.
