Bueng Kan was originally named Chaiburi and was part of the province of Nakhon Phanom.

Bueng Kan is positioned in the valley of the Mekong River and has both highlands and flat farmlands. The closest border crossing to Laos is in Nong Khai at the Friendship Bridge, which connects with Vientiane. The Laotian province of Bolikhamxai is situated directly across the Mekong from Bueng Kan.

Bueng Kan and the surrounding areas are filled with fields of rocks and streams. There are numerous nature walks to enjoy as well as kayaking opportunities along the local streams. Some beautiful temples can be seen in Bueng Kan such as Wat Sawang Arom, which is positioned along the Mekong River.

Travel to Bueng Kan - Getting There

Being located only 87 miles from the busy border town of Nong Khai, Bueng Kan is easy to travel to. There are mini buses with frequent services from Nong Khai that take only 1 hour, 30 minutes. From Bangkok to Nong Khai there are overnight bus services as well as trains with comfortable cabins available.
