Battambang Museum Travel Guide

Although it may not be the largest or most interesting museum in the country, Battambang Museum contains a number of ancient artifacts and is a good place to visit for those who have time to kill in Battambang.

All of the treasures here come from Battambang Province and include a number of intricately sculptured lintels as well as pieces from Phnom Banan and Sneng. Among the highlights here are two statues of Bodhisattva which date back to the 13th century and are marked with thousands of Buddha images, while also of note is the depiction of Yama riding a buffalo.

All the displays here are clearly marked in Khmer, English and French, allowing visitors to gain a good understanding of the exhibits. Also of interest is the Tonle Sap display, which is a tribute to Cambodia’s lifeline, depicting the way in which this mighty river affects the lives of the people of this rich and diverse country.

Those who are interested in the cultural practices of Battambang Province will want to step into the building next door, which features displays on local fishing and agricultural practices as well as folktales and local legends.
