Ban Hat Khrai is a small riverside village on the Mekong, a few kilometres south of the border town of Chiang Khong in Thailand’s far north. It owes its fame to a single, extraordinary fish: the Mekong giant catfish, the largest freshwater catfish in the world, which the village has long been known for catching as the fish move upriver.

For generations the hunt for these giants was a great local occasion, and even today a rare catch is met with celebration, since a single fish fetches a very good price for the fortunate fisherman. The species has been fished almost to extinction, however, and its survival is now further threatened by dams built on the Mekong’s tributaries, which block many fish from reaching their spawning grounds. A local breeding programme has been established to help secure the catfish’s future.

The fisheries office sits by the river in Ban Hat Khrai and can be visited, offering a chance to learn about the giant catfish in its natural habitat. The village is an easy short trip from Chiang Khong by motorcycle taxi or bus; if you make your own way, turn off at Wat Hat Khrai and follow the lane down to the riverside.

Small‑town northern charm makes Ban Hat Khrai appealing to travelers who want countryside calm, temple visits and local markets. The surrounding rice paddies and low hills invite peaceful walks, while neighborhood wats host festivals and merit‑making rituals that reveal Lanna-influenced culture. Food is rooted in regionally familiar dishes-sticky rice, grilled meats and noodle soups-served at market stalls and roadside cafés where life moves at a slower pace.

Ban Hat Khrai is best known as one of the few places to see the giant Mekong catfish (pla buk), the largest freshwater catfish in the world. Historically the hunting and catching of these fish was accompanied by great fanfare, and a good catch still brings mass celebration - a single fish fetches a fine price for the fisherman skilled enough to land one.

The species has been fished almost to extinction, and dams built on tributaries of the Mekong now hamper many fish from reaching their spawning grounds, so they often die without spawning. A breeding programme runs here in an attempt to secure the catfish’s future.

The fisheries office sits by the river a few kilometres south of the village, on Highway 1020. It is open daily and free to visit; various fees apply for boat trips. The village lies about 2 km south of Chiang Khong - turn off at Wat Hat Khrai and head down to the riverside.

Visit Ban Hat Khrai in November-February for cooler, drier weather that makes outdoor activities comfortable. The area heats up March-May, while June-October brings a wetter monsoon with muddy trails.
