Tokushima’s Awa Odori is a centuries‑old dance festival that grew from local Obon rites in the old Awa province into a nationwide phenomenon. The modern festival centres on large, coordinated dance troupes (ren) and amateur groups who parade through the city, keeping a living tradition alive.

Expect a noisy, exuberant atmosphere: rows of dancers in yukata and straw hats, musicians with shamisen, taiko and flute, and shouted rhythms that draw crowds into the streets. Performances focus in downtown Tokushima - along major boulevards, shopping arcades and near the Awa Odori Kaikan - while smaller neighbourhood events run simultaneously.

Tokushima’s Awa Odori runs every year from 12 to 15 August and is fixed to those dates rather than a lunar calendar; it coincides with the national Obon period when many Japanese return home. The four nights fill quickly: every evening features continuous street parades and scheduled shows, with the busiest crowds usually on the middle and final nights.

Kansai International Airport (Osaka) is the main international gateway for overseas visitors, followed by a 2 - 3 hour train/bus journey to Tokushima; domestic flights land at Tokushima Awaodori Airport with a short bus transfer into the city. Arrive at least a day early to settle in and book accommodation and any reserved viewing seats well ahead.

• Summer heat is intense in August: wear light clothing, comfortable shoes and carry water and sunscreen.
