Trivia
Atauro Island has been used as a prison in the past by the Portuguese and Indonesian governments.

However, if you are looking for pure relaxation then this is a great place to visit and simply unwind for a while. Atauro Island's beaches are clean and perfect for sunbathing, while you can cool off in the crystal clear blue waters.

Divers and snorkelers will be pleased to find out that the area has a well-preserved coral reef and there are some pretty sea creatures to discover. Trekking is a popular pastime and there are a number of pretty villages dotted around the island.

This is a good place to sample fresh sea food, while the carving center at Makili is a good place to pick up a souvenir or two.
