Nam Tok Mae Sa Travel Guide

The seven tiers of Mae Sa Waterfall make it one of the most scenic cascades in northern Thailand, and easy access from Chiang Mai ensures it is busy much of the year.

Since the waterfall has been thoroughly developed by the government, visitors can literally drive right to the site. Most people come out to Mae Sa simply to enjoy the sounds of cascading water and have a picnic. There are a couple of swimming holes when there’s enough water, and you’ll likely see young Thais splashing around.

The waterfall is incredibly easy to access off the paved road and therefore it sees a steady flow of visitors. Foreigners have to pay an entrance fee of 200 baht each since it is a government-run park, so don’t be surprised when the gatekeeper asks for money.

If the crowds are too much around the main waterfall, just follow the water uphill and there are numerous hideaways where you can sit under the jungle canopy and enjoy some solitude.

Getting There & Away

From Chiang Mai, the easiest way to reach Mae Sa Waterfall is to rent your own scooter or car and drive north along Route 107 towards the town of Mae Rim. At the junction with the road to Samoeng, turn left and after six kilometers, signs will appear indicating the entrance to the waterfall park. The nearest airport is in central Chiang Mai, just 30 minutes away.

Tour companies in Chiang Mai also offer daytrips to Mae Sa Waterfall and the neighbouring attractions around Mae Rim. Visitors can easily reach Chiang Mai via plane, train or bus.
