Located in the southern reaches of Cambodia, Kandal province circles, but does not encompass, the capital city Phnom Penh. Little known by foreigners, the province featured in the film Rice People, which was the first Cambodian film ever to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994.

The provincial capital, Ta Khmau (meaning ‘black grandfather’) is located to the south of the national capital and holds little interest for tourists. Mostly tourists to Kandal prefer to travel to the capital for sightseeing.

As a rural province, Kandal offers little in the way of tourist infrastructure, with local buses being the best way to get around and home stays being the predominant form of accommodation.
