The surrounding landscape and terrain of Zhangmu is picturesque with dramatic mountains, flowing rivers, blooming flowers and open grasslands. With an altitude of 7,546 feet, the city experiences a subtropical climate that is mild and humid for half the year coupled with dry and cold winters.

Numerous local guides are available to take you on exciting mountain treks and hikes varying in difficulty. In the middle of town there are countless shops, restaurants and hotels as well as the nightly bazaar, which attracts large crowds of locals and tourists.

Reaching Zhangmu can be difficult with no scheduled buses running to the town from neighboring cities. You will need to either hire a car and self-drive or hire a private taxi, which can be easily organized from any hotel front desk or travel agency. The Tibetan capital of Lhasa has an airport with flights to various cities in the region, with flight times to Beijing approximately 4 hours.
