Yixian Travel Guide

Yixian is a small county in southern Anhui, East China, and is one of the places where visitors head for trips to Huangshan Mountain. The mountain is 50kms away toward Tunxi and is accessed by bus and taxi from the Yixian villages.

Yixian County stems from the Qin Dynasty and is well over 2,000 years old. It is one of the oldest counties in the country and harbors many villages with Anhui-style buildings. There are numerous Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings in brick, stone and wood and are best viewed in Xidi and Hongcun UNESCO World Cultural Heritage

villages.

Buildings to look out for in Xidi Village include the Dafu Grand House, Lingyun Tower, and Hu Wenguang. Hongcun Village resembles that of an ox, with the west end resembling the head, four bridges for the legs, and numerous houses for the body.

The landscape around Yixian is incredibly scenic, while the hiking up Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) to views its jagged peaks is the main attraction.

Getting There & Away

Yixian is best accessed by car or bus from Tunxi, an hour’s drive or 50kms away. Tunxi Airport (Huangshan Airport) is the easiest way in, while Shanghai’s airports both receive better connections including international flights. Buses and trains run direct to Tunxi from Shanghai.
